The sky is not the limit

We are engineering the future of space launch

The demand for payload transport to space is literally skyrocketing, encouraging innovators to rethink how we can reach earth’s orbit.

One such innovator is the startup Moonshot Space, which is developing an electromagnetic mass driver orbital launch system. While the idea of an electromagnetic mass driver has some history already, new ideas and advances in engineering technologies are bringing it closer to reality.

The vision: using powerful pulsed magnetic fields to accelerate a capsule to hypersonic velocity inside a long vacuum tube, enabling it to reach Earth's orbit without conventional rocket propulsion. Turning this vision into reality requires overcoming immense engineering challenges—and that's where we come in. Moonshot Space asked RI for help in the development of one of the system's core components: the accelerating coil.

Over the past months, our team at RI established dynamic Multiphysics 3D models to evaluate the requirements for generating magnetic field pulses of several Tesla. In parallel, we developed a technical manufacturing concept capable of handling the extreme electromagnetic forces and thermal stresses associated with such a pulsed high-power system.

Projects like this demonstrate how our cutting-edge simulation and engineering capabilities can help transform ambitious ideas into feasible technologies. We are excited to contribute to shaping the future of space transportation.

Stay tuned for updates.
