About us

Sustainability

Our Sustainability Mission

As a science-based company, we recognize our responsibility with regard to climate change. We are commited to reducing our CO2 footprint as part of our contribution to global climate action.

To that end, we are continuously working to optimize our work and process chains with the goal of reducing energy and raw material consumption. We have been implementing targeted measures since 2017. Currently, our focus is on Scope 1 and 2 emissions because this is where we can exert the most direct influence. We plan to expand our analysis to Scope 3 emissions in the near future.

Our goal for 2025 is to enhance our existing management system by introducing an environmental management system aligned with DIN ISO 14001. This will help us to systematically integrate environmental considerations into RI's structure and decision-making. We aim to achieve formal certification under DIN ISO 14001 in 2026.

The Three Scopes of Greenhouse Gas Emission

Scope 1:
These are direct greenhouse gas emissions from sources that a company owns or controls—like fuel burned in company vehicles or emissions from on-site production facilities.

Scope 2:
These are indirect emissions from the generation of purchased energy, such as electricity, steam, or heating, that the company consumes but does not produce itself.

Scope 3:
These include all other indirect emissions in a company’s value chain—upstream and downstream—like business travel, purchased goods, product use, or waste disposal.

Facts & Figures

Total CO2 Emissions

This figure comprises RI’s CO2-emissions for selected years in the past, present and future. Shown are the three largest sources of our company: heating, mobility, and electricity.

CO2 Emissions

Heating

The largest source of CO2 emissions by RI is from district heating of our site at Technologiepark Bergisch Gladbach – a scope 2 emission. Since we rent these buildings, it is unfortunately not under our control. For our new own buildings in Obereschbach, we adopted modern standards including state-of-the-art thermal insulation and electrical heat pumps

Mobility

Mobility is presently the second largest source of CO2 emissions at RI. This includes travel between our three sites and to external customers worldwide.

RI is currently investing in electrifying the carpool and has introduced a travel policy restricting travel by plane.

CO2 Emissions

Electricity

Already in 2017, we decided to switch to electricity from renewable sources and thereby reduce our carbon footprint by a large margin.

RI Actions toward NetZero

Sustainability is a core consideration in all our new building projects. Pictured here is our first dedicated production facility in Obereschbach. The rooftop features clearly visible green planting and energy-efficient electrical heat pumps. Installation of photovoltaic (PV) solar panels is planned for spring 2025, further enhancing the building’s environmental performance.

RI Sustainability Reports

You can download and read our full sustainability reports here. The report for 2023 is already available, offering insights into our activities, energy usage, and progress toward our sustainability goals. Reports for subsequent years will be published as they become available. Currently, in July 2025, we are finalizing the report for 2024.
