Particle Accelerators

Components and Systems

For over two decades, we at RI have been developing particle accelerators based on our extensive manufacturing and engineering expertise. It hardly matters which particles need to be accelerated or on what base. Our portfolio includes both normal-conducting and superconducting linear accelerators, as well as recirculating systems such as microtrons, cyclotrons, and synchrotrons.

What sets us apart?
We are committed to developing tailored solutions – in close collaboration with our customers. In doing so, we draw not only on over 30 years of in-house experience but also on a global network of scientific accelerator facilities. Our customers are always more than just clients: they are our partners.

RI designs and manufactures custom-tailored turn-key systems. In the past decades, our team has delivered various electron and ion linear accelerators to research facilities around the globe.

Based on a few parameters such as beam performance and physical boundaries, we provide the following services and components related to turn-key accelerator systems:

  • Physics layout
  • Design
  • Studies of beam dynamics as well as project-specific component design
  • Procurement, production and installation of devices and systems
  • Custom-tailored magnet systems, including but not limited to solenoids, dipoles, and quadrupoles for static and dynamic use
  • Beam diagnostics elements: intercepting and not intercepting for a range of currents and pulse structures
  • Pulsed magnets for injection, extraction and beam distribution
  • Commissioning, training and service

Accelerator Modules

RI also designs and manufactures modules for particle accelerators.

We handle all steps of the module production:

  • Preparation and cold RF testing of the cavities
  • RF processing of the couplers
  • Class 10 (ISO 4) clean room assemblies
  • Assembly and integration of modules including cryogenic and control systems
  • Factory acceptance test
  • We also offer to conduct the installation and acceptance testing of the modules on site

RF Cavities & Couplers

Over the past decades, RI has accumulated an outstanding knowledge and experience with the design, production and delivery of a wide range of copper and niobium RF cavities as well as RF power couplers. We are experts in RF accelerator technology for scientific and industrial applications and have delivered more than 2000 superconducting RF cavities to customers around the globe, representing more than 50 percent of the world market share.

1. Superconducting cavities

With the manufacturing infrastructure at RI, we can manufacture superconducting cavities at rates of up to 200 cavities per year. The different cavity types we offer are

  • Elliptical
  • Quarter wave
  • Half wave
  • Spoke
  • CH-mode

In developing prototypes of superconducting niobium cavities, our objective is to achieve both the mechanical tolerances and the correct RF parameters (frequency, field flatness, coupling) already with the first cavity. Prototype development involves in-house metal forming, turning, milling, chemical surface preparation, and electron beam welding, RF optimization and final surface preparation.

2. Couplers

Parallel to the superconducting cavities, RI develops and manufactures RF power couplers of different types for customers worldwide. In total more than 1000 couplers have been manufactured.

3. Normal conducting cavities

RI has delivered normal conducting copper cavities in the frequency range from 52 MHz to 5 GHz and from 1 to 156 cells. Among the cavities we offer are

  • Pill box designs
  • RF quadrupoles
  • cavity coupled linacs
  • S-band accelerating sections
  • any type of storage ring cavity

Particle Sources

Particle sources are the starting point of any accelerator facility and they play an important role also in other contexts. RI designs and manufactures electron and ion sources according to customer requirements and specifications.

We build sources for the generation of particle beams with a wide range of properties:

  • particle type: electrons, protons, deuterons, H2+, ...
  • beam current: from micro Ampere to Ampere
  • time structure: pulsed or continuous beam
  • pulse structure: from single bunch to macro-pulses with micro-pulse modulation (up to 3 GHz)
  • pulse length: from sub-nanosecond to ∞
  • transversal dimension: low emittance and matched Twiss parameters

The particle sources can be delivered as turnkey systems completed with infrastructure such as

  • control system
  • high voltage power supply
  • RF power supply
  • vacuum components
  • gas supply
  • beam diagnostics
  • focusing and steering magnets
